In 1871 the company was founded in Grieskirchen by Franz Pottinger, who developed a forage cutting machine. There are now three production locations:

In 1963 POTTINGER were one of the pioneers in developing the loader wagon. Today POTTINGER have around 50% of the global wagon market and are number one worldwide in this segment.

In the UK in 2012, significant investment was made in a two acre head office site with a 1,800m² parts warehouse and training facilities and Alois Pottinger UK Ltd commenced trading from centrally located premises in Corby, Northamptonshire.
